U.S. Secretary of Education Names Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy 2022 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School
The U.S. Department of Education announced today that Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy in North Windham, Connecticut is among the 2022 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees.
Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy was nominated by CT Outdoor and Environmental Education Association (COEEA). C.H. Barrows STEM Academy is always looking for new ways to use our property as a learning tool that promotes sustainability and an environmentally conscious mindset. To that end, we are extremely proud of our specialized labs, outdoor classrooms, walking paths, urban farming curriculum, butterfly stations and raised garden beds to name a few. We have solar water heaters, a wind turbine that we collect data on, a full service health center, a food share program, and new this year, an Aerogation Green Wall in our 7th and 8th grade hallway that is maintained by our students.
Across the country, 27 schools, five districts, and four postsecondary institutions are being honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education. The honorees were named from a pool of candidates nominated by 19 states.
