Welcome to the seventh grade and to my classroom. I am so excited about this coming year. First, I would like to introduce myself. I am originally from New Jersey but have lived in numerous states as well as in Ecuador, South America, when I was in the Peace Corps. I received my B.A. in Biology from Boston University and my M.A.T. in Science Education from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. I am certified to teach all subjects in Grades K-6 and General Science and Biology in Grades 7-12. I have taught fourth grade, fifth grade, and sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grade science in four different states. This is my third year at Barrows STEM Academy.
I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in two teacher-research fellowships. In 2010, I was honored to be chosen as a NOAA Teacher at Sea Fellow. I spent two weeks in May working alongside ocean scientists studying the Pollock fishery in the Gulf of Alaska. My 7th grade students followed along through the use of my blog. I was also awarded an Earthwatch Fellowship in 2008 to travel to New Orleans and participate in a research expedition in the bayous of Louisiana. The expedition was researching caterpillars and looking at the effect of extreme weather events on their populations. I brought my students along with me through videoconferencing and a daily blog.
Communication between teachers and parents is essential to each student’s success in school. Each day I will post assignments and information on this website I also have a website,http://yay-science7.wikispaces.com with lots of resources for students. Please don’t hesitate to e-mail me or call the school if you have any questions or concerns. I will get back to you as soon as I can. I look forward to working with each of you to make this the best year yet.
